Meet Douglas Stone
Douglas Stone has worked in the investment management business for 30 years as a consultant, portfolio manager, and risk manager. He is CEO and Principal Consultant of Groupe la Pierre (GLP) Risk Management.
GLP provides consulting services to equity, fixed income and derivative based asset managers.
The scope of GLP’s consulting services covers risk management, asset allocation, and business advice. Prior to the creation of GLP, Mr. Stone worked at Allianz Global Investors, formerly Nicholas Applegate, for 20 years in a number of roles from portfolio manager to director of research and risk management.
At Allianz he developed an automated risk management system which produced 2000 charts, tables, and graphs daily on equity funds, fixed income funds, and hedge funds. Mr. Stone developed an expert system to alert the CEO and CIO of potential issues with portfolios.
Mr. Stone was a vice president and senior research analyst in the research group at the Frank Russell Company in Tacoma, Washington from 1984 to 1994. He managed a global fixed income project for a Japanese client that resulted in several million dollars of new revenue. With Salomon Brothers, he helped develop the Salomon – Russell Global Indices (now the S&P global indices). He co-developed client strategies prompting investment of several hundred million dollars in currency hedging and in emerging markets. He was the editor of the Russell Commentaries, white papers that were sent to all clients on a wide range of investment topics. He designed a rebalancing system for one of the largest US pension funds based on the use of genetic algorithms. This resulted in the client saving tens of millions of dollars.
Prior to his experience at Russell, Mr. Stone was an economist for various levels of government. He worked on the staff of the Assistant Secretary of Interior for Planning, Policy, and Budgeting. He worked on a national security project relating to energy and he co-authored a report to Congress from the Secretaries of Interior and Agriculture on the financial viability of Western ranchers.
Mr. Stone has authored and co-authored articles in the Journal of Financial Econometrics, the Financial Analyst’s Journal, the Journal of Economic Perspectives, The Journal of Investing, the Journal of Quantitative Finance, and the American Journal of Agricultural Economics. He was also the founding co-editor of the Emerging Markets Quarterly.
Mr. Stone holds a B.A. in political science from Northeastern University and a M.B.A. in international finance from the University of Washington.
